Piazza del Campo, in the middle of the city if Siena, Tuscany, is considered one of the largest and most famous Europe’s medieval squares. The square, established in the 13th century, holds to this day a medieval horse race, called Palio di Siena, which takes place twice a year. The race’s origins go back to the late 16th century, when it was organized as a replacement to bullfighting, which was outlawed in those days.
